A new month is here! And with it? more gigs, of course! here are five of the best to look out for this may

It’s supposed to be sunnier than it is, but living in England, we’ve got to take what we’re given.

Living in Bristol, however, we’re often given treats. Here are 5 of them to partake in this May.

1. Saturday, 3rd May – Bite the Buffalo – Birdcage – £3

Black Keys-esque Bite The Buffalo Play the Birdcage on the 3rd

It’s the bank holiday weekend! An additional day off work! How very exciting. They’re all excited over at the Birdcage, too, and are throwing together some special Saturday night live music to celebrate. Headlining the bill are Bite the Buffalo, who conjure disproportionately large airwave vibrations considering they’re a humble two piece. Like the Black Keys but better… and the support acts aren’t bad, either.

2. Sunday, 4th May – The Ramona Flowers – Thekla – £8

The bank holiday weekend continues and, whilst we’re not keen on social acronyms, we’re OMFGing at Thekla’s Sunday evening line up. Recently XFM-playlisted The Ramona Flowers have drawn comparisons with everyone from The xx to Radiohead and take to the stage alongside Seasfire, The Other Tribe and Idles as the iconic music venue turns 30 – be there.

3. Sunday, 18th May – Beaty Heart – Louisiana – £6 adv

The live music moves over to the Louie on the 18th of May, as we welcome Beaty Heart once again into our midsts. Three out of four of the aptly named Peckham boys take up some form of percussion on stage, allowing them to recreate the easygoing tribal beats they weave into their material expertly. The band come to Bristol as part of their world tour – impressive considering they’re yet to release their debut album.

4. Saturday, 24th May – Port Isla – Who knows? – £pricey-but-worth-it

Catch Port Isla at Dot to Dot on the 24th May – worth missing Love saves The day for

We’ve cheated on this one a bit: Port Isla are swinging into Bristol as part of the epic Dot to Dot, which takes place on Saturday the 24th of this month. The festival once again clashes with Love Saves The Day, but we reckon you’re better off at the former… and once you’ve come to realise that make sure you check out Port Isla. Though a little subtler, the Norwich band definitely have a tinge of Springsteen about them… we just hope they’re on late enough in the day for us to enjoy their set to the max.

5. Saturday, 31st May – Goan Dogs – Birdcage – £3

We’re gonna go ahead and suggest you check out Goan Dogs’ set at the Birdcage at the very end of this month, quite simply because this Bristol band have promise. The quintet bill themselves as ‘desert rock’, which is likely a nod towards the wild western notes and tales that creep across their music. For a meagre £3 it’s worth popping your head in if you’re in the area… the band even promise visuals.

And if we’ve missed something (which we of course have) you can write to us:

Bristol Beats Club HQ, Bristol, Bristol, West.

It’ll probably reach us. See you at the above.
