new bristol duo brockley forest have just released their debut single, Run for your money. Here’s what we made of it.

Gritty, sleazy and from Bristol; its two-piece rock outfit Brockley Forest. These guys claim to share a bond similar to that of the Kills (that’s encouraging) and have just released their debut single, Run For Your Money. We checked it out and had this to report…

Deep, grimy grooves & a rudimentary overdrive

It’s safe to say that there’s no vintage Fender Jazzmaster amp in the Brockley Forest set up. The fuzzy and crunchy distortion created for Run For Your Money is the product of some cruder electronics than that. But the deep and grimy grooves (reminiscent of Death from above 1979, remember those fellas?) are complimented nicely by this rudimentary overdrive.

There is, of course, a danger of creating a featureless dirge when such musical techniques are adopted. But Run For Your Money avoids that entirely. The record is blessed with some incredibly catchy vocal hooks and completed with an acoustic-y break down in the middle. Rest assured, this is a proper track.

Lo-fi, rock and roll twosome revolution

With Southampton duo Dolomite Minor featuring on the prestigious XFM great expectations list this year, it would seem there is still a healthy interest in lo-fi rock and roll twosomes here in the UK. So watch out for Brockley Forest, they could be coming to a gig near you very soon.

Oh yeah, we forgot to mention: you can download Run For Your Money for free from the Brockley Forest Soundcloud page. You probably feel cheated now because you’ve just spent two minutes of your life reading our eloquent (but now essentially redundant) description. And you’re right to. You’ll never get that time back. As ever, we apologise.
